We are extension professionals and have been doing extension for many years across a range of sectors. So we know that effective extension is about people learning together in a context that is practical and relevant to their own situation. Our approach is to use modern extension approaches and adult learning principles to get real capacity building results. We believe that good extension helps facilitate positive change in people and helps them increase their own decision making abilities so they can achieve their goals.
From field days and workshops through mentoring and farmer group facilitation to 6 month extension programs; we believe that good extension can only be done when you have a strategy for what you want to achieve. We can also develop extension resources including Manuals, Booklets and Factsheets as well as video products. We help organisations train their extension and technical staff in extension methods through our “Rural Extension: doing it well” Workshops and Course. We can also help your organisation develop an extension strategy to make the most of limited extension resources.
I was extremely fortunate to “discover” David Hardwick at a Landcare conference some years ago where I was exposed to his unique, engaging extension style; he turned our group into soil micro-organisms so we could understand how nutrients cycle and move into the crop. Since then, I have worked extensively with David to bring workshops to farmers in Far North Queensland that bring knowledge and build decision making skills that help them with both production and environmental outcomes. David’s gift is his ability to synthesise complex science with practical communication at a number of levels: he can relate to school children, seasoned farmers, extension staff and management equally. More recently I have asked David to develop a series of workshops aimed at extension staff that link agricultural practices to water quality for the $15million Wet Tropics Major Integrated Project.
